New Teachers Already Making Their Mark

perrineReuel Smith, Kristin Van Sickle and Richard Perrine have joined the Northwest Academy faculty for the 2014-15 school year.

“I love the spirit, energy and work ethic of my middle school classes,” Smith, who teaches Algebra 1, said. “Partly I came here from New York City because of NWA’s commitment to both the arts and academics. How could anyone not love a school in which all sixth graders take tap class!”

Even though Northwest Academy’s environment is unlike any other, Scott Kerman, Dean of Curriculum, is confident that the teachers will find their stride.

“The first year of any new school is a challenge,” Kerman said. “There is so much to learn. Everything from: ‘Where is the bathroom?’ ‘Where do I put my lunch?’ To the entire history of the school.”

Perrine, who teaches Physics, Algebra 2 and Architectural Design, comes from more formal schools and still has to familiarize himself with Northwest Academy’s unique culture.

“I’m still getting used to the school,” Perrine said. “I’m so used to coming into school in a suit and slacks, and now I can come in jeans and a T-shirt, and when it’s warm I can wear shorts.”

The teachers are working on keeping their classes fun during the first few weeks of school.

“Perrine is very energetic and engaging,” Pearce Hyatt, a sophomore, said. “He is very excited to teach us.”

The first weeks have been good to the teachers and they are excited to continue on in the year.

“So far it has been a great start,” Van Sickle, who teaches Middle School Vocal Music, said. “I can’t wait for the groups to begin preparing to perform.”

The new teachers and their families are finding ways to enjoy their new home of Portland.

Van Sickle spends her time out of school enjoying Portland’s outdoors by camping, swimming and watching television. Smith enjoys his walks to and from school and talking to friends in New York City.

“Outside of school? I take care of four kids,” Perrine said. “I’m a family man. I like to hang out with my family. I’m getting involved in scouts with my kids.”

When Northwest Academy has an opening, they put an ad on their website and other job-seeking sites. All three new teachers saw an ad and replied about the openings.

“For all teachers, the criteria is the same, somebody who has a passion for teaching and we think will fit or enhance our culture,” Kerman said. “We like people who have a desire to be here at Northwest Academy.”
