Behind the Scenes at the Prom

seniorsNorthwest Academy held its annual prom on Friday April 25th at the Union/Pine building. The senior class worked throughout the school year to prepare for the big night. Without their efforts, the prom would have never happened.

“We had several meetings where we just sat down and then wrote everything we needed on the whiteboard,” Alex Ramiller, a senior, said.

In these meetings the primary goal was how much everything would cost and what fundraisers to
do.

“We used examples from previous years,” Miya Frank, a senior, said. “We were going to do a bake sale, but then we had enough money so we didn’t.”

They had to raise approximately $1,400 for the building and a couple hundred dollars for decorations, food and other accessories. The prom tickets raised approximately $1,000, the seniors raised about $300 with a Christmas wreath sale and about $250 dollars with each one of the three dances held earlier in the year.

The night before the prom, the seniors on the committee went shopping for everything that they would need. They had to arrive at the building early so that they could set up all of the decorations.

“We had to show up early to prom,” Grace Underdahl, a senior, said. “Just coordinating, making sure that everything that needed to get to prom did get to prom. We had to prepare for disasters as well, we had a bowl of punch and it started leaking out the bottom. Juice started flowing everywhere; it was kind of bad but we fixed it.”

Through all this hard work the seniors were able to make a very good prom. Doug Cornett, a teacher at Northwest Academy, served as the DJ and high school photographer, Heidi Kirkpatrick, took pictures. They had many refreshments and 10 teacher chaperones to watch the party. They even joined the dancing whenever a song that they liked came on.

“It’s a hard task but we got it done,” Underdahl said.
