Making It All Up

improvMembers of the Rainy Day Improv troupe will be performing at The Angry Pigeon next Friday.

As part of David Berkson’s improv and sketch comedy class, eight student performers are showcasing their talent for class credit.

Isaac Monti, a freshman has been taking improv with Berkson for three years.

“I like creating stuff out of thin air and trying to push my comfort zone in a way that makes everybody laugh,” Monti said.

Elayna Caron, a senior, loves acting in the goofy skits.

“In improv we just play a lot of great games, however my favorites are avatar and the dating game,” Caron said.

The dating game is designed to mock a cheesy game show. It has four actors, three of which are the contestants and one who is the bachelor. When the bachelor leaves the room, the three contestants choose quirks about their personality. Once the traits are chosen, the bachelor comes back to the room and gets three questions to ask each contestant. Through the questions, the bachelor must decipher what their personality quirks are.

The second game, avatar, is also played with four actors on stage. Two are speaking the dialogue while the other two act it out.

Stella Kaplan, a freshman, has acted before, but never in an improv skit.

“Improv is a new kind of theatre to me,” Kaplan said. “Because it’s spontaneous it leads for some funny scenes.”

Grace Ettinger, a freshman, has participated in many improv performances.

“My favorite memory is back in sixth grade when we started to play space jump and there was a dead horse involved and it ended up being one of the funniest skits I’ve been in,” Ettinger said.

Improv is a unique type of theatre where there is no script or any planned plot to take place during the scene. Usually the scene will begin with two or more people on stage. The audience will then make a suggestion with which the actors must construct a story.

The Angry Pigeon Art gallery is located at 712 SW 11th St. The show is open to every one of all ages and tickets are $5 at the door. Seating will begin at 6:45 pm for the 7 pm show.
