Senior to Launch Literary Magazine
Alex Hill, senior, and other Northwest Academy students are creating an independent literary magazine where artists can submit their work.
“There was a time when people would collect magazines and records and books and that kind of thing, and I don’t want to lose that,” Hill said. “So we made a print literary magazine that people could read.”
The publication will be called Suss Magazine. “Suss” means to find or discover something by thinking, Hill’s vision exactly for what people will get from submitting to and reading the magazine.
Suss Magazine will publish short stories, essays, nonfiction writing, plays and scripts. Artists can also submit photos or scanned copies of paintings and sculptures.
What sets Suss Magazine apart from other high school literary magazines is that submissions aren’t limited to members of the Northwest Academy community. Hill plans to put posters around coffee shops and college campuses in Portland to get other artists interested in submitting their work. Copies of the magazine will also be distributed around Portland for others to read.
Hill has invited a group of passionate artists to work on Suss Magazine.
“Now is the age to start as an artist,” Hill said. “We aren’t trying to make any political statements, just show our work.”
This is a vision that Hill has had for a while. There have been failed attempts at a literary magazine in the past, but this time, he is determined to make it happen.
The first edition of Suss Magazine will be published on December 15th with new editions released seasonally.
To submit to Suss Magazine send in a short bio of 1-5 sentences in the 3rd person about yourself with attached files of your work to sussmagazine@gmail.com, Suss Magazine’s Facebook Page or in person through Alex Hill. Submissions must be made by November 15th.
